Why Fantasy Books Are The Best

Fantasy books generate about $600 million in sales every year. It’s safe to say it’s an incredibly popular genre.

But why do we love to escape into the magical world of fantasy? Whether you love dragon slayers, dangerous quests, or powerful witches, there are some clear reasons why fantasy books are the best.

5 Reasons Why Fantasy Books Are The Best

Best fantasy books
  1. Escapism

It’s no secret that the real world can get really depressing. The cost of living is still going up, the threat of viruses is still looming, and the planet keeps getting warmer.

So, is it any surprise we want to escape into fantasy worlds of magic and adventure? When real life gets a little too real, fantasy books are a welcomed break.

“I have claimed that Escape is one of the main functions of fairy-stories, and since I do not disapprove of them, it is plain that I do not accept the tone of scorn or pity with which ‘Escape’ is now so often used. Why should a man be scorned if, finding himself in prison, he tries to get out and go home? Or if he cannot do so, he thinks and talks about other topics than jailers and prison-walls?” – J.R.R. Tolkien

2. Imagination

Did you know that kids who read fantasy books on a regular basis have better imaginations? Yes, it’s important to read non-fiction, but fantasy books help with creativity, world-building, and even empathy.

People who consume fantasy are also happier and more willing to learn new things. It seems that taking the time to understand complex fantasy worlds can expand our minds to new ideas here in the real world, too.

3. Pure Entertainment

There are few genres that can make me laugh out loud like fantasy can. The quirky characters, incredible lore, and insane quests are incredibly engaging and keep you entertained for hours.

You’ll never quite know what you’ll get with a fantasy book. Since real-world laws don’t apply, the sky is the limit, which means the storylines can be a rollercoaster.

4. Community

There is a huge, fierce community around fantasy worlds, and some of the nicest people I’ve ever met are part of those fandoms. Fantasy books were always seen as nerdy when I was young, and that outsider-ness helped formed deep friendships.

These days, you’ll find insightful, interesting people in forums and online communities who love fantasy and want to share it with others. It’s the entire reason I built this website – to connect with others who love fantasy books as much as I do.

5. The Aesthetic

The cover art of some fantasy books is out of this world. If you’re into fantasy, you’ll have the most beautiful bookshelves filled with stunning covers. From gold leaf framing to intricate fantasy designs, I proudly display my favourite fantasy books and love how incredible they look.

The Best Fantasy Books to Read This Month

If you’re sold and want to jump into the intriguing world of fantasy, here are my top fantasy book recommendations to get started with.

When The Dead Rise by Nicholas P Williams

why read fantasy books

Well, of course, I’m going to recommend my book first. When The Dead Rise is a dark fantasy story about Azerrad, a centuries-old, sarcastic vampire who is sworn to protect dark spell books from his homeland. When they’re stolen, he has no choice but to follow them to new worlds, where a holy brotherhood of soldiers awaits.

Will Azerrad be able to team up with the soldiers to protect the books? Will they go against everything they’ve ever known and trust a vampire? Or will all hell break loose? You can find out in book one of the series.

The Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne

This Norse-inspired fantasy book follows three warriors on dangerous quests. The world-building is incredible, and the interwoven storylines will keep you hooked till the very end.

The Shadow of the Gods is part of the Bloodsworn Saga and another great starting point into the fantasy world.

Mageborn by Jessica Thorne

fantasy books to read

Prepared to have your heart shattered by Mageborn. This book follows the story of orphan Grace Marchant, who’s on a mission to save her friend, who has been kidnapped by the crown.

She quickly discovers that the Queen has plans to use the mageborn’s stolen powers for herself and enlists the help of Prince Bastien Larelwynn to stop her and find her friend before it’s too late.

The Pariah by Anthony Ryan

Why fantasy books are the best

The Pariah is book one of a new fantasy series by Ryan. The book follows Alwyn Scribe, an outlaw who eventually becomes a soldier in the King’s army after being betrayed by a fellow thief.

Scribe must survive the war if he’s going to exact his revenge, but there are dark forces rising up to oppose his commander, Avadine.

It’s a fast-paced fantasy book with incredible characters and a twisty storyline that will keep you guessing.

And That’s Why Fantasy Books Are The Best

I may be biased, but I truly believe that everyone should read at least one epic fantasy book in their lifetime, and that’s all you need to get hooked. Who doesn’t want to fly with dragons, battle necromancers, and save the world? Beats a day at the office.
